The Worcester Roots Project, a grassroots non-profit based in Main South, is looking for a Fall intern to work with youth members of the Toxic Soil Busters program a group of youth, ages 15-16, making neighborhoods healthier and safer by getting lead out of the soil on a documentary.
Positions available for volunteer interns and students looking for academic credit.
Internships begin in late September, 2007.

What You Can Do:
1. designing a curriculum for high school students about environmental
health, specifically lead poisoning
2. Web design (this page needs you!)
3. conducting field experiments to test the relative effectiveness of
different plants in absorbing lead
4. Creating a distributing soil lead remediation kits, including
information sheets, and seeds
5. Conducting library research on phytoremediation and sharing your
findings with the Worc Roots volunteers
6. Planning and presenting workshops for the general public
7. Soil testing and hands on remediation in the neighborhoods
8. Recruitment and organizing volunteers
9. Lobbying the state and local governments for a more stringent lead law-
this involves meeting with city council, maybe with state-level
policymakers
10. Using GIS to conduct an independent project mapping the "high risk"
areas for lead poisoning in worcester- based on the age of the housing
stock/other land use criteria
In order to be successful at any of these, you would need:
1. To be willing to do independent reading to educate yourself about lead
and phytoremediation.
2. To be able to work independently and take a leadership role in your
project. We do not have an office or a boss- you need initiative and
access to a computer is you choose a project that requires one.
3. To be willing to attend meetings. we meet every other week and can
schedule meetings so that you can attend.
4. To be willing to work for free or write grants to cover your stipend.
5. There are no required hours or application. You tell us what you want
to do and when. Then we'll set up a meeting to get you started.
